For the last 18 months, the next generation of designers and artists have been cooped inside the four walls of their bedrooms. With university classes moved online, in-person teaching limited and studio time restricted to the bare minimum, students and emerging creative talent have been forced to continue creating from cramped flats and restless living conditions.
It comes at perfect timing, then, that the Sarabande Foundation has opened applications for its studio spaces. Set up by Lee Alexander McQueen to help mentor and support new design talent, the charitable organisation has supported over 100 creatives since opening its studios in 2015.
Located in a grade-2 listed building in Haggerston, East London, Sarabande offers both scholarships and affordable studios to designers, artists and craftspeople at the beginning of their careers. With an impressive list of alumni that includes Craig Green, Bianca Saunders and Stefan Cooke, each has benefited from studio spaces ranging from £50 to £170 a month, which includes the price of utilities, the use of communal spaces and equipment, and free professional services and mentoring.
As much as the Sarabande Studio is a place to work, it is also a chance to network and exchange ideas amongst a community of like-minded creatives from varied professions. For information on how to apply, follow this link.
