Saint Laurent: Menswear SS20

With sandy toes and sunny kisses, Anthony Vaccarello hosted the West Coast part of the destination show tour. Surrounded by the shiniest Hollywood glitterati (Miley Cyrus, Keanu Reeves and Hailee Baldwin were all in attendance), Vaccarello showcased an ode to off-duty rock’n’roll. You know, even Mick Jagger likes to get out of his skin-tight jeans and slip into something a bit more comfortable when on holiday. Actually, Jagger was one of the inspirations for the Saint Laurent SS20 men’s collection, with Vaccarello being in charge of designing his looks for the upcoming Rolling Stones tour.

Declaring LA the new Marrakech, the French fashion house completely deconstructed Hollywood holiday style, all by blurring the lines between 1970s silhouettes we traditionally attach to men’s and womenswear. The YSL boys looked more in touch with their feminine side with caftan-esque elements against their sharp tailoring, while the girls looked as badass as always, toughened up by the glam rock spirit. The waves crashed onto the rocks, and the sun set down a bit lower with each of the looks. We couldn’t have been anywhere else but in Malibu, but the clothes had a decisive sense of French elegance in them. A pair of cut-off denim shorts and a black leather shirt – LA. Worn under a mid-calf beige trench-coat and patent leather Oxford shoes – Paris. The last section was made out of 20 pairs of wide-legged, pleated palazzo trousers joined a variety of delicate blouses, both billowing in the salty wind of the Paradise Cove in Malibu. It was something different, it was sexy. For his second destination show at YSL, Vaccarello nearly erased the strict lines of menswear and womenswear. It doesn’t matter who wears these clothes – they just look so god damn cool.
