Chitose Abe has made Sacai into an international success story for her ability to turn the familiar inside out, upside down and into clothes that are rather extraordinary. Her hybridised designs make magic of everyday staples: in Abe’s hands, jeans, trench coats and suit jackets become heroes of your wardrobe.
For her SS26 collection she turned up the dial on her miss-matched designs, modelled on an all-star cast including Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigová and Mariacarla Boscono. Here sculptural blazers were welded with parkas and cropped above the waist to create coats that jutted outwards elegantly with utilitarian flair. Elsewhere, rain macs became big skirts and jeans were sliced and pulled over the shoulders to become outlandish cape-like structures. There’s always plenty to marvel at when it comes to the Sacai team’s pattern-cutting skills. Shredded patches of tweed were bulldozed into one another to make dresses that dripped in fringing, while leather pieces came jigsawed together to create glossy jacket and skirt matching sets.
