Ryan Lo is having a red carpet moment. More and more, it’s celebrities who turn to the Hong Kong-born, London-based fashion designers for sartorial options in their public appearances. In the one-off TV revival of 4 Weddings and a Funeral, it was Lily James who wore a rose lace wedding dress custom-made by Lo. Then it was Maisie Williams who promoted the ultimate season of Game Thrones on Jimmy Fallon’s talk show in a black mini ruffled number, also carrying Lo’s label. And while his sugary-sweet concoctions of dresses were seriously missed during this past London Fashion Week, the designer is obviously embracing the celeb love for SS20. Titled The Rom Com, his latest outing revamped the archetypal female characters from the often disregarded genre of films.
In place of a catwalk, the dreamy set plays with notions of reality and fantasy, a duality that has always been apparent in Lo’s collections. As for the clothes, they are quintessential Ryan Lo, re-empowering girly colours and frilly cuts and fabrics. The collection hones in on the designer’s biggest strengths as well as his new-found popularity in carpet dressing. Frocks aplenty joined by tailoring in seriously rich fabrics, unravels a playful scenario that’s ready for a big film premiere any of Lo’s fans might have planned for the months to come. Collaborative accessories complete the full-to-the-brim looks – Lo worked with Gina Shoes on the sparkly footwear, and Stephen Jones for the fantastical millinery. Award season is upon us too, and these dresses will look mighty good under the flashing lights.
