Roksanda’s love of architecture is well known. She studied the subject, commissioned David Adjaye to design her flagship store and this season held her show in the Serpentine pavilion, designed by leading female architect Frida Escobedo. The SS19 collection had architecture at its core. It was inspired by Le Corbusier – not his buildings but his tapestries which featured dancing line drawn figures. They were printed across swirling silk dresses and appeared in multiple layers on tulle gowns. At first glance they looked like embroideries, “No. they’re rubberised – we spray them on,” explained the designer backstage. Hourglass striped linen jackets and voluminous culottes were also inspired by the tapestries. Roksanda is one of fashion’s great colourists. Her palette of turmeric, rose, taupe was inspired by desert sunsets. Add to that her way with volume and innate sense of elegance and Roksanda’s world is complete.
