Today we shed a shopping trolly full of tears for TV presenter extraordinaire Mr Dale Winton, who sadly passed away yesterday aged 62.
On hearing of his death, the comedian and television presenter Graham Norton thanked Winton for “the best bit of showbiz advice I ever got – don’t quit the hit!”
It is with particular sadness that we report Winton’s passing as he was, and remains, a particular favourite of denizens of 10.
“He’s 10 Men’s spirit animal…” says staffer Richard Gray “…a perma-tanned creature and gorgeous personality,” adding “he was – and I mean this in the most complimentary way -camper than a tea cosie. What a joy.”
Older readers will remember Winton’s extravagant performances as the presenter of cult daytime TV quiz show Supermarket Sweep, a hyper-real affair where bored housewives and regional gays ran around a mock Tesco-esque studio-fit grabbing at maxi-size jars of coffee and tins of beans, before throwing them into shopping trollies. Television doesn’t get much better than this.
After a brief holiday away from the cameras Winton returned to host nowadays peasant’s opium The National Lottery. It was on his every word, and of course, the great numbered ball drop, that the nation stood quiet and watched in hope, every week.
Goodbye dear Dale, we love you!
