Richard Gray Mourns The Jean Paul Gaultier

RICHARD GRAY MOURNS THE JEAN PAUL GAULTIER BOUTIQUE.

I am sorry to announce the closure of the Jean Paul Gaultier shop on Draycott Avenue, Knightsbridge, London, a mecca for fashion students in the late ‘80s early-to-mid ’90s.

I came down on the National Express coach from Yorkshire at 15-years-old with the sole intention of running my hands across the rails and perhaps – as I read in The Face – bumping into Gaultier who, it said “comes to London regularly for the clubbing scene”.
In the summer of 1994 I wore a Gaultier tattoo-print long sleeved top to The Hacienda in Manchester. I stole my mum’s wrap-over black floor length skirt and wore the whole spectacle with Adidas black shell-toe trainers and a top-knot.
Things were different then – clubbing and club kids were all. Late night TV shows were devoted to clubbing and a part of that has now gone.
Here’s JPG at his club track best.
