We were so incredibly sad to hear that photographer David Armstrong has passed away, aged 60. A remarkable man with a remarkable gift, we are proud to have worked with him. As our Editor-in-Chief Sophia said, “It was such an honour that he was part of our world, we cherished him so much.” Known for his intimate portraits of men, his photographs invite us into an intimate space with his subjects whose gaze often meets that of our own, the viewer. This intimacy, combined with the often semi or fully nude state of his subjects, most of whom were friends or lovers of Armstrong, make his photographs palpable with a blood-thick honey-sweet sensuality. He produced countless iconic images throughout his forty-year-long career, leaving in his wake a generation of inspired photographers such as Ryan McGinley and Alasdair McLellan. This man will be sorely missed but his life, along with his legacy, will not easily be forgotten.
