RALPH LAUREN: PORTRAIT OF THE DESIGNER

FROM THE VAULT (SUMMER 2011)

NAME: Ralph Lauren

OCCUPATION: Designer

“The way people live and their dreams and aspirations are most important to me. I love the way people look and live in America – in a glamorous Hollywood setting or on the open plains of the west. I love the heritage of an English cottage covered in roses and a woman in her muddy wellies tending her garden. I love a young couple sipping wine in a romantic little café in Paris. Or a picnic on an island beach enjoyed by family and friends. These are scenes from the movies that are always in my head and always inspire me.”

Ten. Issue 35

We would also like to note that Ralph has what is probably the most amazing collection of cars your eyes will ever rest upon. Over the years Ralph has amassed a collection of what can only be described as the finest examples of automobile innovation in the last century. Gems include the ‘Blower’ Bentley from 1929, the Ferrari 250 GTO from 1962, the Mercedes 300 SL from 1955, the Bugatti Atlantic from 1938 and the Jaguar D type, most admired for it’s shark fin. Each looks like something you’d see driving through Gotham City. Each is on view at Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris until August 28th.
