How better could Raf have said “AMERICA” than plopping his cast of 22 models (!) on a stretch of American highway? Save for actually wrapping them up in stars and stripes, of course, oh wait… he did that too. The open road, the infinite possibilities, land of the free, etc. etc. This Fall campaign, Raf’s first ready-to-wear for Calvin Klein, would appear a homage to Raf’s new identity for the brand, especially when said highway is lined with a series of billboards featuring images from last season’s ‘American Classics’ campaign. Meta.
“The campaign is a study in art and artifice, of the real and the imagined, the mannered world of high fashion combined with a sense of the everyday,” says la release. “Ultimately, the campaign explores the cinematic and romantic outsider’s view of America, something of a dream world that has become concrete for Chief Creative Officer Raf Simons and Creative Director Pieter Mulier.”
Shot by Willy Vanderperre, the campaign also introduces the new denim line, Calvin Klein Jeans Est. 1978, which will feature an emblazoned silhouette of that Brooke Shields image taken by Richard Avedon for Calvin Klein Jeans back in 1981. This nostalgia is not so much a celebration of Calvin’s glittering past, a self administered pat on the back, but an acceptance of change, and an embrace of things to come. We couldn’t be more excited.
