Preview: Missoni At The Fashion And Textile Museum

Missoni 1

Ciao bambino! A little nugget of Italian glamour is landing in London this week in the form of Missoni’s MISSONI, ART, COLOUR exhibition at The Fashion And Textile Museum. Slowly travelling about the world, it explores the brand’s relationship with art – “MISSONI, ART, COLOUR includes over 40 paintings by European artists from the 20th century, such as Gino Severini, Lucio Fontana and Sonia Delaunay, who have influenced the creative process of Missoni over the course of its long creative, cultural and artistic journey.” But, as well as plenty arty bits, because it’s Missoni and also sponsored by the Woolmark company, there will be a deep probing into also the art of knitwear – as the blurb says, “merino wool is featured in the majority of the garments on display, showcasing the heritage and cultural history of the Missoni family’s association with wool”. You’ll basically be cocooned in the stuff.

“This exhibition is designed to showcase the creative process of knitting artwork into fashion forms. It’s always a great challenge to rediscover the potential of our colourful heritage to make unique, positive experiences,” said Luca Missoni, Director of the Missoni Archive. “Wool is an essential ingredient in our work, so much so that wool has practically become a synonym for Missoni: Missoni, knit, wool; wool, knit, Missoni.”
