The Prada man this season is a nomad man. A fancy, nylon-clad nomad man who wears his possessions on his body and carries them with him wherever he goes. On his back is a backpack, from which hangs a change of shoes, and round his waist sits a belt, used not to hold up trousers, but more as a way of carrying more things on his person. Belts, we recently read, have been used by man for thousands of years in different ways. And the modern-day belt can be very useful in a survival situation. A sturdy, durable belt, “will be the best device you have to carry primary items that you need quick access to, such as a handgun, spare ammunition, a knife, flashlight, hatchet”. You can use it as a weapon should you find yourself face to face with danger in the wild. Sharpen the buckle with a rock and it will serve as a whip-like weapon, or punch a few holes in it and “use it to fasten a knife to the end of a pole to make a spear”. A weapon in the wild can also be used for killing your next meal. There is no Tesco Metro in the jungle. Should the next meal happen to be rather large and bulky to transport back to your camp, you can fasten your belt around it and pull it behind you. Alternatively, you could also just stay at home and use your belt for its traditional purpose: keeping your trousers up.
