Prada’s nylon is an undisputed fashion favourite, both here at Ten Towers and amongst the wider industry. So much so, that if we let Richard Gray have his way, Prada nylon would be a compulsory office uniform. It’s fantastic news then that the juggernaut house is giving its classic bag silhouettes a sustainable make-over. Conceived through a partnership with textile yarn producer Aquafil, Prada has mastered a regenerated nylon – Econyl. Created from a recycling and purification process of plastic waste collected from the ocean, fishing nets and textile fibre waste – the brand is set to introduce the pioneering creation through a capsule collection of all time Prada favourites. The Prada Re-Nylon collection kick-starts with six unisex styles including Prada backpacks, a tote bag and the iconic belt bag.
“This project highlights our continued efforts towards promoting a responsible business,” says Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Head of Marketing and Communication. “This collection will allow us to make our contribution and create products without using new resources.” The stats read: for every 10,000 tons of Econyl created, 70,000 barrels of petroleum are saved. This alone reduces environmental emissions of CO2 by 57,100 tons. And Prada doesn’t plan on stopping there. By the end of 2021, the brand hopes to convert all virgin nylon into Re-Nylon – if that’s not an excuse to treat yourself to some new Prada, I don’t know what is. Sustainability never looked so slick.
