The Selfridges Corner Shop has just received a fresh coat of paint, this time handing the brush to Prada. Known for its intellectual and artistic approach to design, the Italian luxury house has partnered with international photographic cooperative, Magnum Photos, to create an innovative exhibition exploring the relationship between humankind and the natural world. Featuring 150 images, the picture-perfect display entitled Witness to Nature, is part of the new Prada Reporter project – a series of pop-up stores drawing on the house’s multi-disciplinary approach to design. Kicking off in London with plans to travel to other major cities, the exhibition is set to hone in on the intersections between fashion, art and nature.
Curated by Magnum, the display platforms eight photographers from all corners of the world, largely exploring the juxtaposition of our manmade concrete jungle with nature’s effortless charm. Divided into four key themes – nature and metropolis, costumes and cultures, community and seclusion and eternal and ephemeral – the exhibition jumps from Nanna Heitmann’s images of the secluded banks of Siberia’s Yenisey River to Newsha Tavakolian’s reflection on the impacts of global warming on Iran and more.
The space also intersperses an exclusive selection of garments and accessories amongst the imagery. Specifically focusing on pieces that reflect the traditional attire of roaming photographers – camouflage, layering, pockets and the like – the palette of the collection bounces between muted shades of black and green. Complementing its overarching theme, furnishings include floor-to-ceiling panels adorned with backlit photo frames and mannequins posed to get the winning shot. Furniture cosplays as swelled camera components, giving the space a playful and focused feel.
