PRADA: AW11 BACKSTAGE BOYS

FROM THE VAULT (SUMMER 2011)

The geometric patterns weaved through with Lurex that glittered on the jumpers at Prada were the house triangle blown up and messed about with a bit, said Mrs Prada. The rest of the collection was neat and clean but still looked messed about with a bit. Look at those overcoats with outsized volume shoulders for a start; those were huge and not normal. It could have been the sense of occasion, but we did remember thinking: “I could do that.” The “aviator bags”, those big squares of leather, were huge, too. She’s always messing about with things.

We were somewhere in the 1960s and 1970s with the track and field story that kept popping up: jersey-luxe jogging bottoms with elasticated ankles and tops worn together could be like “jogging suits”, as in suits. Here’s a styling tip: underneath those turtlenecks, worn underneath those knits weaved through with glittering Lurex, were shirts that fasten down the back (we’re taking step class in anticipation). Prada shoes have become collectables in the past five seasons and these look like the ones we wore in the 1990s, practical and modernist, but with a raised sole. “I have the exact same pair, or something very similar, from Prada years back,” one 10 staffer said. Wear them, then.
