FROM THE VAULT- THE CHINA ISSUE (WINTER / SPRING 2012)
What’s new for spring/summer 2012?
“Saturated bright colours, bold massive florals and a crisp, clean silhouette with a skinny leg.”
What was the inspiration/idea behind the collection?
“This collection is all about super-bold femininity with a slight 1960s downtown edge.”
Do you have a favourite piece? Or do you love them all the same?
“I am especially happy with the prints – the zebra print captures the essence of this chic yet quirky woman I was thinking about.”
Does your Chinese heritage influence your work in any way?
“It’s part of who I am, so the combination of my heritage and my architect parents gave me an eye for a clean line and bold colours.”
What made you want to become a designer? Did you have a “eureka” moment?
“I was always drawing as a kid. I was very shy, so sketching was my own little world, but it wasn’t until fifth grade, when I saw my sister’s Paris Vogues and L’Officiels, that I had that ‘ah-ha’ moment. It was the early 1980s – the pages were filled with Claude Montana and Thierry Mugler. I was sold.”
What’s your Chinese horoscope sign?
“Year of the Dog.”
Do you believe in fortune cookies? In fortune-telling?
“I believe fortune cookies are a delicious way to end a meal. I am open to fortune-telling – it gives hope.”
What’s your favourite Chinese takeaway?
“Grand Sichuan NY soup dumplings.”
