Unbeknownst to us, Dominic is a pro golfer. Something about spending his youth at “Top Golf” in Woking, a self-proclaimed “sprawling entertainment venue with a high-tech driving range & swanky lounge with drinks & games.” He enjoyed it so much he once walked 6.7 miles in the middle of the night to get home, but that’s a different story. It was no surprise, then, that it was Dominic who burst through the door this morning with the news that Paul Smith (alongside the London Design Festival) is setting up a crazy golf course right on our very doorstep in Trafalgar Square. And not just any crazy golf course, oh no – each hole will be designed by someone equally as talented as Paul – from Tom Dixon and Japanese agency Atelier Bow-Wow to the late, great Zaha Hadid. It’ll be entitled the “Visionary Crazy Golf” and will run during the Design Festival from 16–22 September. “All of the designers I have invited to take part have been given free reign to be playful, original and have fun,” said Paul to Wallpaper* magazine.
But there’s a catch. Paul needs your money. And you know that he doesn’t ask for that lightly – he’s a very very nice man. That’s because the course will be funded by donations through Kickstarter, the project needing £120,000 to get off the ground. And because (as we mentioned) Paul Smith is a very very nice man, he, alongside the rest of his pals that are designing the course will gift you special gifts if you do donate – Paul’s designed a lovely set of socks and scarves for you generous sorts.
