In a see of ephemeral stories, one of the rare fashion collabs that’s been going on for over a decade is Fred Perry x Raf Simons, an idea originally conceived back in 2008 as a common creative ground of the two brands. Both focused on interpreting the past, present and future of youth culture, the unique meeting has given some truly iconic interpretations of wardrobe classics over the years. A button-up shirt, a hoodie and, of course, a polo shirt – all these familiar silhouettes have gone through seasonal interpretations which always effortlessly merged the timelines of two brands.
For the SS20 chapter, which is officially launching digitally today, Raf and the team at Fred Perry have elevated the story they started last season. Using the rich photographic archive of Gavin Watson, who documented Britain’s countercultural youth during the late 1970s and early 1980s, they turned simple ideas into objects of expressing self-identity. As usual, it’s a contrasting spirit of nostalgia and modernity, with signature Raf details appearing alongside the screen-printed textiles. Drop-shoulder forms on sweatshirts, graphic logo applications, neutral colourways, oversized shapes and a DIY spirit of a punk attitude via the silver nose-rings – every Raf Simons superfan will be kept happy. And what more do you want?
