What’s better than a Luca Guadagnino film? A Luca Guadagnino film, costumed by Jonathan Anderson. Today, the Call Me By Your Name director announced his latest feature film – his first since 2018’s Suspiria. Titled Challengers, the plot follows tennis coach Tashi (played by Zendaya) and her student-slash-husband, Art (played by Mike Faist) who is somewhat of a star player. After a surprise losing streak, Art is demoted to a smaller league tournament, where he is due to play Patrick (played by Josh O’Connor), an ex fling of Tashi’s, which leads to a bit of a love triangle between the trio.
Anderson’s inclusion in the project makes perfect sense. O’Connor has been a poster boy for the designer’s Eye/Loewe/Nature collections, and Zendaya looked magnifique on the cover of Interview Magazine wearing one of the Spanish house’s resin torso dresses from SS22. Anderson announced his involvement in the project earlier today via Instagram, writing: “Very excited to be working with my dear friend Luca Guadagnino on costumes for his new film “Challengers” such a dream.”
While this is Anderson’s first time working on costume for a feature length film, this isn’t Guadagnino’s first foray into fashion. The director has shot campaigns for Zegna and Fendi, while also capturing the film for Kim Jones’ second-ever Fendi couture collection. Guadagnino also worked closely with Valentino for his short film The Staggering Girl. Could we expect some JW Anderson pigeon bags flying onto the big screen? Or even Zendaya dressed in one of Loewe’s car dresses? Only time will tell.
