Could we call Walter Pfeiffer, the first name in Helmut Lang’s ‘Seen By The Artist’ series, fashion’s greatest underground photographer? The Zürich-based snapper has inspired countless of today’s most famed photographers and, together with Helmut Lang, his work will be recontextualised for a new generation to ogle and admire. You know what those millennials are like, they need a bit of spoon feeding now and again. Whether shooting still life or catwalk models, art or fashion, B&W or colour, Walter Pfeiffer does the lot – without ever compromising that gritty romantic realism that has influenced the works of Juergen Teller, Wolfgang Tillmans and David Sims.
I mean, how many photographers can you list who are capable of making a photograph of the back of somebody’s head so engaging? That fade, that embryonic rattail – it’s truly indicative of the skill of a photographer when you find yourself wanting to reach out and give said rattail a twizzle, which, normally, we would obviously never dream of. As part of the series, all the artists’ work will be released in monthly instalments from October 2017 and will be available as limited edition posters, t-shirts and special objects. We’re baffled as to what ‘special objects’ might be, but we’re holding out for something shiny and expensive.
