10 Questions with Neneh Cherry, In Celebration of Her Six-Look Matches Fashion Edit

If there was one wardrobe we’d like to raid, it would be Neneh Cherry’s. As eclectic in her musical outings as she is in her fashions, the legendary singer-songwriter is known for being able to pull of what most wouldn’t even dare to try. Once again, that’s both music and style. Ever since her 1989 debut album Raw Like Sushi, Cherry has been considered a style icon in every sense of the word. Together with Culture Club, Soul II Soul and a whole group of young and talented creatives, Cherry defined 1990s style as part of the Buffalo collective. With the big resurgence of the decade taking over fashion (again), this seems like the right time to ask Neneh Cherry to curate a selection of our seasonal buys, according to her own unique style. That’s exactly what Matches Fashion asked her to do. Six looks, taken from the rich offerings of the latest collections to hit their virtual shelves. And what better way to celebrate this big moment than point our “Ten Towers” microphones into Cherry’s direction and ask her 10 questions. Take the Buffalo stance and get ready for a quick-fire session. Neneh Cherry – take it away!

Dino Bonacic: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Neneh Cherry: “Don’t cry over spilt milk.” And “Don’t let ‘em change you,” which my dad always used to say.

DB: Which 1990s trend do you wish for never to come back?

NC: I can’t remember the 1990s! [laughs]

DB: Is there anything you regret wearing at any point in your life? If so, what is it?

NC: Shoulder pads.

DB: Who are the people that inspire your style?

NC: Raggamuffins and grannies.

DB: Which piece from your Matches edit would you take to a desert island and why? (only one!)

NC: I would take the over-the-knee boots because I could literally climb up the side of a hill in those things if I needed to.

DB: What’s the last thing you do before you go to sleep – excluding tooth brushing?

NC: Close my eyes.

DB: What’s the song you currently get out of your head?

RC: Rapture by Koffee.

DB: Do you ever steal/borrow clothes from your daughters’ closet?

RC: I have three daughters and yes, I steal their clothes. I’m not sure specifically which pieces I have, but I’m holding them hostage until they give some of mine back.

DB: What’s your party trick?

RC: Chicken, cornbread and good tunes.

DB: What are the designers you love to wear today and why?

RC: Noki, Martine Rose, Phoebe English, Abiola Onabule, Edward Crutchley, Raf Simons, Acne Studios, Stella McCartney and Christopher Shannon because they are all original, they are all inspiring and they all make me feel good.

DB: If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?

RC: Inequality.
