Modernist Retro. For spring, Neil Barrett continued his aesthetic journey through his formative years – seventies snd eighties England – that began with his Winter collection, gathering references with a nostalgic familiarity and reinterpreting them to be contemporary. This time, the interpretation came, oddly, via the American import Starsky and Hutch. That gave the collection it’s chambray blue and tan colour palette, and it’s retro-tinged shapes in boxy car coats, bombers and high-waisted trousers. Thankfully, no flares. That’s where the modernist bit comes in: narrow trousers, neat t-shirts, lots of the inlaid graphics that Barrett has staked a claim to as his own. And it’s exciting to see Barrett riffing on his own heritage – the military tinged of the collection reflected both his own styles, and his family’s business as military tailors in Devon.
