MSGM: Ready-To-Wear AW26

“It’s a play on memories,” said Massimo Giorgetti of his AW26 collection, which saw him examine the DNA of MSGM, which is rooted in the art beloved by the designer.

On his mood board of his show , fittingly held at the Fondazione ICA? Works by Leonor Fini (sometimes called ‘the cat lady of surrealism’ for her cat paintings) and the LA based painter Amanda Wall whose work explores intimacy, vulnerability and desire. Add to that his reflections on the heritage of his brand which launched in 2009, fusing contemporary silhouettes with a signature, highlighter bright, Instagram-friendly colour palette.

With The Cure’s The Lovecats on the soundtrack, Giorgetti sent out a collection that fused feline  inspired pieces and bourgeois codes with wild pops of colour. It’s a combination inspired by the women he meets in the art world, “Because they put colours together, they put things together. They are quite weird, but quite cool,” he said.

He took the feline inspiration to heart (although he owns two terriers), splashing cat illustrations on shirts and skirts as well as working with a supplier to perfectly imitate the pelt of a Bengal cat for the plush maxi costs and mini skirts, paired with a neon green cotton night neck top. Masculine and feminine played off each other with floral satin mini dresses worn with an oversized, tomato-red parka, or tailored purple city coats and boyish slouchy double denim combos worn with oversized parkas and pops of neon green, pink or orange accessories. It’s exactly the kind of quirky combination the MSGM girl has made her own. There’s an art to it.
