Molly Goddard: Ready-To-Wear SS24

A visit to the National Theatre archives inspired Molly Goddard who was fascinated by the interior of the garments she found there. Her inside-out aesthetic saw her place frothy petticoats on the outside of dresses and made the internal grosgrain ribbon of a corseted garment, an exterior feature. “We turned things inside out and discovered grosgrain strapping, internal zips, boning, and binding. These elements play a key part in the collection,” said the designer.

If Fifties petticoats are her happy place, then Goddard played to her strengths with full skirts, inside-out bra tops and chunky twinset knits. It was Sandra Dee with a modern attitude. A sense of nostalgia carried through. One dress could have been made from a satin eiderdown another looked like a debutante had dressed in a hurry and put her ballgown on inside out. Goddard expanded her aesthetic with flatform pumps and frilled bags. Those frills, which also exploded from the seams of tailored jackets, are, of course, Goddard’s signature and function like a logo. Inner workings and strong signals sum it up.
