Molly Goddard: Ready-To-Wear SS20

And off to the Seymour Leisure Centre, we went for the Molly Goddard SS20 show. A caterpillar of single-row benches filled the space, sandwiched so close together you had to awkwardly brush next to all the fabulously dressed guests and semi-stressed out editors. It’s day two of London Fashion Week, and the buzz is real. But as soon as we walked in, the question on everyone’s mind was – how are those massive tulle dresses going to walk down without whipping a certain editor-in-chief right in the face?

Well, it didn’t – bust mostly because there weren’t any of those incredibly fluffy frocks in the show. Looking back to her days of studying at Central Saint Martins, Molly Goddard revisited ideas from her unfinished MA graduate collection. Taking a break down from last season’s grandeur of Swarovski crystals and monumental volume, the West London girl is off to the Cotswolds for a long weekend. And in her chic Globetrotter suitcase, there’s a wardrobe made for a fun time in the countryside. An asymmetrical poplin dress in lime green for a roast at the pub, a knitted cardi with bows and a circle skirt for the walk around the woods. Well, to call the looks simple would be a total overstatement, but there was an everyday sensibility that enveloped these clothes. Tulle was still aplenty (less so than usual), with denim and poplin bringing the fantasy into the real world.

For all us Molly superfans, the surprise was her first excursion into leather bags. A variety of shapes referenced the mid-noughties IT bags – studded and in a whole range of colours, including that so-wrong-it’s-right shade of cognac brown. Sadly, the bags were only her exploration of the category and won’t actually go on sale. All those that missed the big dress bonanza, got what they wanted in the final look. A cake-topper of a hot pink ruched cotton confection embellished with red ribbons, worn by the ultimate Molly Goddard girl Edie Campbell, made sure all appetites were satisfied.
