MM6: Ready-to-wear SS20

What’s that sound? Oh, just the wedding bells hitting hard at MM6. Maison Margiela’s younger sister of a brand is eloping to Milan, inspired by the conceptual performance of Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s wedding. Even the groom is dressed in the brand’s tailoring. And yes, there’s cake too – one of those oversized white concoctions that definitely looks better than it tastes. No, this is not a fashion dream – it’s yesterday’s MM6 show. Referencing the partnership of Ono and Lennon as its starting point, the collection questioned ideas of dressing up and down and the rebellious spirit of foregoing a dress code. Hoodies and tutu dresses with graphic slogans worn over blue jeans. “Just Margiela,” instead of “Just Married.” What’s appropriate? Who cares, this is the Margiela family.

The bouquet is printed on the dress rather than carried in the hands. While the MM6 is labelled as womenswear, there were suits worn by male models in the show, their long streaky hair referencing Lennon’s. Some of the pieces will also be made in men’s sizes, a sign of MM6 branching out. And of course – the accessories. Costume jewellery included a necklace with keys (To the honey moon suite? Or Yoko and John’s Room 702 from the Bed-In for Peace?) and white floral brooches. A cake-like confection is made into a sandal, while the silver crushed tin bag makes sure you’ve got a snack once you need a break from the heavy bridal drinking. Who ever said weddings are boring?
