Polly Pocket was my six year-old self’s definition of covetable. One of my earliest memories is accidentally breaking off the head of my friend Amy’s Polly Pocket doll, and being too scared to admit it was my fault out of fear of being ex-communicated. Until this day I am still filled with an unbelievable sense of guilt. Oops.
For all those 90s girls who, like me, were utterly swept up in the pocket-sized plastic phenomenon I have great news… To celebrate Polly’s relaunch later this year, the British-American designer, Fashion East alum and all-round babe Mimi Wade has done it again. Following on from her purrfect Pink Panther collaboration for her AW17 collection and her ongoing nostalgia for golden era Hollywood, Mimi has teamed up with Polly Pocket to create the cutest capsule collection of jewellery and ready-to-wear pieces.
Pastel-toned dresses and lace-trimmed tees are emblazoned with prints featuring the ultimate 1990s #TBT toy captured in a variety of adventures. Think Polly riding a baby seahorse or swimming in a bowl of fruit loops. “The definitive message for me is that great things come in small packages. It’s about your character and attributes rather than your physical stature,” explains Mimi. “For this collaboration I wanted to highlight the idea of Polly being this tiny adventurer, and was thinking about films that play with the element of perspective like Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, The Taste of Tea, The Borrowers and Land of the Giants when I came up with the graphics.”
In addition, Mimi has also teamed up with jewellery designer Vicki Sarge to create a series of maximalistic bracelets, earrings and necklaces. Brimming with rhinestones, Swarovski crystals, freshwater pearls and, of course, miniature Polly figurines – the pieces are more than your childhood-self could ever have dreamed of. I better get something for Amy.
