Ralph Lauren in the John Huston of fashion. His work has always had a sweeping, seductive cinematic quality, so much so, that his version of the American dream is entwined with the national consciousness.
For his SS21 Purple Collection digital experience, the master storyteller, leaned-in to his American myth-making prowess, conjuring a black and white, Bogart and Becall world, where natural, easy elegance ruled. The clothes are available to buy now so Lauren skewed his take on golden era, Hollywood style for a post-pandemic world.
The look was informal, comfortable but polished. Open neck shirts and high waisted baggy chinos for both men and women, gave way to velvet blazers, distressed to look like denim, easy knitted column dresses and nautical colourways. A pair of louche striped pyjamas, worn with heels, said so much about where we’ve been for the last year, and where we are going. Janelle Monae performed a silky-voiced set in Lauren’s Beverly Hills boutique. She sang Sinatra’s ‘All or Nothing At All’. For Ralph Lauren, that means nostalgia made right for now.
