Molly Goddard designed her SS22 collection whilst eight months pregnant. That provided ready-made inspiration for a collection that turned mini-me dressing on its head. “I blew up baby clothes I wore as a child to adult size, tracing the pattern and making it 10 or 20 times bigger,” she explained. It’s an idea she’d explored in her graduation collection, which established her smock-tastic signature style and those beloved Molly Goddard smocks have huge appeal.
This time they came in glorious broderie Anglais babydolls, made with 40m of fabric, or in sheer colourful volumes crafted from a sheer, crispy cotton. There were voluminous big-baby smocks for boys and girls (worn with ballet fats by both) and they were surprisingly versatile. Worn over denim or track pants, they were Goddard’s twist on 2021 comfort dressing. Drama and ease all in one piece.
