Max Mara: Ready-To-Wear SS24

When you think of Max Mara, workwear might not be the first thing that comes to mind but for spring 2024, creative director Ian Griffiths decided to explore utilitarianism, albeit through the lens of an Italian luxury label. Titled An Army of Women, the collection was inspired by the Women’s Land Army, a group of Englishwomen in the 1940s, who were also known as the Land Girls. Hailing from all socioeconomic classes, these women opted to work the land but were also encouraged to engage in creative pursuits. Dubbed Demeter in dungarees, this idealized image of a rosy cheeked woman in an idyllic landscape served as the launching point for looks.

Though the brand might be known best for its use of sedated neutrals, this time around it was floral-inspired hues that dominated the palette with shades like royal blue, peony pink, and jade green leading the way. Some styles offered a direct reference to these agriculutral origins with the likes of jodhpurs and jumpsuits as well as workwear jackets and rompers. For those looking for dresses, the new backless silhouette draws its inspiration from aprons, with its thin straps, while whispy chiffon gowns are contrasted with garbadine straps. To end, a series of black and white tailored styles including a white blouse, unbuttoned to navel, paired with black short shorts and a duster jacket because at the end of the day, the Max Mara woman can’t resist a classic look.
