Matches Fashion Push for Positive Change As They Launch Their Responsible Edit

Being responsible with your shopping no longer means simply cutting down how many pair of shoes you buy each month. It’s 2020, and collectively we need to be questioning how eco-friendly is that bag and ask if the new coat on your back is really worth the unethical conditions it was made under? This change starts at the retailers themselves – the more responsible the clothes they stock, the more sustainable their customer’s shop. Luxury e-tailer Matches Fashion are doing exactly just that. Opposed to simply slotting a few sustainable designers within their main collection, the e-commerce platform is launching The Responsible Edit. The launched follows their Responsible Survey which found that nearly 70% of Matches customers said they try to live their lives as sustainable as possible.

The Responsible Edit spotlights brands who aim to “amplify their commitment to drive change.” In order to be considered for the edit, such brands need to fit into one or more of Matches 4 Key Responsible Pillars: Artisans, People, Charity and Materials. When it comes to menswear, Ahluwalia and Bode lead the pack; two designers dedicated to turning deadstock into treasure and embedding a clear sense of community through their clothes. Also on the list is Alighieri, this year’s winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design, whose intricate jewels have become akin to modern-day artefacts.

The womenswear selection breathes contemporary glamour and elegance through a whisper. There’s Gabriela Hearst, who staged the industry’s first carbon-neutral show last September, and Story MFG – the husband and wife team who create entirely cruelty-free clothing that is 100% biodegradable. A particularly exciting name on the list is Green Pacha, who are based out of California. Crafting gorgeous summer headwear, each hat is made from toquilla palm straw and hand-woven by women artisans in the Ecuadorian mountains – slowing production down to a considered level of refinery. The Responsible Edit isn’t a temporary fad, each season Matches will update the list with brand new designers doing their bit to evolve fashion into a sustainable future. This is the future of e-tail, and Matches Fashion is at the forefront.
