Marques’ Almeida: Ready-to-wear AW20

At the Marques’ Almeida show yesterday, something was missing. The design duo have recently welcomed a baby to the family, meaning Paulo Almedia was left as a lone soldier when it came to the final bow. Despite being a designer down, the brand’s ode to uniting a young community via clothes so in-tune with the now prevailed. Emerging from a thick cloud of smoke, MA’s joyous cast marched to the beat of their own drum, sporting this season’s offerings which set out to give young people a voice through powerful dressing.

Party dresses came slightly warped in sugary pinks or silky blacks with puffed sleeves, worn with knee-high military boots to give the overall look a firm grit in its teeth. Pyjama style separates slouched in extra roomy sizes, walking alongside hoodies that were swollen to epic proportions. Colours were fantastic, whether it be painterly oil spills on outerwear or a subtle cornflower blue that doused ribbed woollen separates appliqued with singular ostrich feathers. Marques’ Almeida aren’t interested in dressing the bored and the bland. They like their boys in vivid acid-washed denim and their girls to dazzle in ponyhair ensembles akin to Big Bird; both in hue and proportion. A much needed mood lifter to a drizzly Saturday afternoon.
