Prada’s Sweet Tooth: The Most Fashionable Pastry Shop Opens its London Branch

Whoever said calories can’t be fashionable obviously never sat down and indulged in the colourful wonders of Marchesi 1824. As one of Milan’s oldest and finest pastry shops (or “pasticceria” if you’re Italian), this sweet tooth staple location has been part of the city’s guidebook for decades. The family-run business was acquired by the Prada Group in 2014, making it not only the most delicious but also the most fashionable pastry shop in town. Luckily, the 180-year-long heritage remained unchanged as Miuccia Prada decided to preserve the nature of the space and its products. The classic Panettone cake, mini versions of the Italian classics such as Torta della nonna, chocolates, pastries and biscuits – with recipes mostly remaining the same for all these years, Marchesi 1824 has become a must-go spot for all those visiting Milan. If you had 10, 15 minutes to spare and you happened to be in close proximity to one of their three Milanese locations, you’d drop by for a slice of cake and an espresso. Now, we don’t have to wait for Milan Fashion Week or our next trip to the Italian fashion capital – Marchesi 1824 have launched its first permanent international location in the heart of London’s Mayfair.

Set in an old butcher’s, with meat hooks still hanging off the ceiling, Marchesi 1824 just opened the doors of 117 Mount Street. Surrounded by flagships of London’s designer names such as Simone Rocha, Christopher Kane and Roksanda, with Prada’s flagship just a 10 minute walk away, the location makes it the perfect shopping break spot on your next credit card-maxing excursion. However, this isn’t the first time Marchesi’s delicacies are coming to London. The pastry store hosted a month-long pop-up on the fourth floor of Harrods in 2014 in their first international excursion ever.

Just like the sweet goodness (re)imagined by award-winning pastry chef Diego Crosara, the 750 square-feet interior of the London location reflects the original ones in Milan. The signature green velvet soft furnishings blend against the dark cherry wood, with the intricate black veined and yellow Siena marble floors standing out as all your interior dreams in one. Transporting in space and time through all the five senses, the new Marchesi 1824 should be your next sweet indulgence. Who needs a beach bod when you can have a pistachio praline? Or 10.

The Marchesi 1824 store is now open at 117 Mount Street, London.
