Marcelo Burlon County of Milan: Menswear AW19

Neon lights flashing in a circular motif, reminiscent of bumper car arenas in those old-school amusement parks. And so our childhood memories came to life at the Marcelo Burlon County of Milan AW19 show, the set taking us way back, all the way to those carefree days when getting a few extra coins for another ride was all one could worry about. And that free spirit wasn’t just about the set – the clothes reflected it too. Purposely mismatched to resemble a real wardrobe of a teenager who happened to grow up into a charming young adult, the collection was a fresh outing of the experienced Milanese designer.

Puffer jackets and beanies, tracksuits and trainers – sportswear might have served as the base of the collection, but there was so much more too. Burlon introduced sporty elements before that was all the rage, so it’s good to see his story of comfort evolving with each season. And for AW19, there was glitz and glam infused into the casualness. Unexpected fabrications like printed faux fur, multicoloured acid denim and sparkly sequins made for fun additions, taking the looks from day to night. A standout piece – a body-hugging lurex mock-neck long-sleeved top went straight to the top of our shopping list for next season.

We might not have a time machine to take us back to those good, old days, but we do have Marcelo Burlon, his flashy nostalgia bringing the best of yesterday and making it the best of tomorrow.
