As we prepare ourselves for a festive season of dressing up to go downstairs – à la Love Island – instead of the annual office Christmas party or secret Santa gift exchanges, why not look to the SS21 shows to release your inner MUA? This season, as always, glowing, goddess skin ruled the catwalks. Many brands drew inspiration from the prolonged periods spent amongst nature that the first lockdown brought and opted for minimal make-up looks. Meanwhile, others juxtaposed the quieter aspects of quarantine with experimentation and striking swooshes of eyeshadow. We’ve rounded up some of our favourite looks from this season’s shows –physical and digital – so whether you’re after a subtle sheen for your office Zoom calls, or something to make heads turn at a virtual New Years Eve bash. look no further!
Painting for the back row at Halpern
Michael Halpern’s spring/summer 2021 collection screams bold colours and vibrant pattern,s and the make-up definitely follows suit. A deep brown, satin lip was accompanied by an extremely pigmented shimmery lilac eyeshadow that extended right up to the brow bone. Whoever told us you have to choose between a bold lip or a striking eye was well and truly mistaken!
Underwater realness at Versace
This season, the Versace girls were dripping with Atlantis-inspired glam. Never one to hold back when it comes to make-up, Donatella Versace chose to maintain the wet and dewy Versace aesthetic for SS2. The hair was slicked and stuck to the Versace gang’s glowing skin, eyes left minimal with lips painted a daring hot pink.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder at Tomo Koizumi
This season, Tomo Koizumi transformed glorious mounds of tulle into the wedding dresses that would fulfil everyone girl’s fantasy. In terms of make-up, we are drawn to the wonderful pops of colour for inspiration. With eyes coated in shimmery and luminous shades and a lighter inner corner highlight, you simply won’t be able to avoid eye contact.
Barefaced beauties at Burberry
The make-up for Burberry’s SS21 outdoors showcase reflected the themes of nature and reconnection with the outdoors, as we saw models walk among the trees refreshingly bare-faced, courtesy of Burberry’s global beauty director, Isamaya Ffrench.
Just be you at Valentino
The Valentino SS21 collection was a celebration of individuality, therefore it comes at no surprise that the make-up looks catered to each models’ distinctive features. Unlike other shows, there was no uniform beauty look. We couldn’t be happier, especially those of us who spent our formative years overwhelming our eyes in liner to attempt a cat eye, when in fact it wasn’t the most flattering for our eye shape. At Valentino, models strut the catwalk with an array of looks. Some artists opted for a thick flick of black liner, while others went for no barely-there make-up – all of which we can get on board with.
Raspberry lips and electric lids at Kenneth Ize
One of our personal favourites, Kenneth Ize’s SS21 collection not only cemented the Nigerian talent as one Paris Fashion Week’s most promising designers, but the make-up was knockout, too. A celebration of colour, each beauty look is nothing less than daring. Bright and bold smudges of eyeshadow extend beyond the contours of the eye, whilst hot pink and luminous red shades adorn the lips of both the boys and girls.
Gothic glamour Rodarte
Halloween has been and gone and the face paint with it, but who’s to say the gothic make-up has to go too? Rodarte is certainly making a point for the return of gothic eyes, dark, crimson-stained lips and wispy lashes. Gothic glam is here to stay.
Hollywood forever at Chanel
As models walked amongst an illuminated Chanel sign, Hollywood glam was certainly in the air at the Grand Palais this season. Along with a few iconic monochrome Chanel suits, the collection also included flashes of neon and bangles galore, so the make-up obviously had to complement it all. In the end, the Chanel team opted for a chalky dab of black eyeshadow and a classic nude lip. Lucky for us, this sounds relatively easy to recreate at home as long as you don’t cross the line into panda eye territory.
Razored brows at Miu Miu
This season’s Miu Miu show was one of the highlights, and although the make-up was minimal, there was one detail that couldn’t go unnoticed – eyebrow slits! If you’re unwilling to commit to the razor, why not try using concealer to mark out some temporary slits as Pat McGrath did at Miu Miu.
2020 vision at Art School
We’ve talked a lot about stand-out eyeshadow, licks of liner and luscious lips, but the SS21 Art School show had other ideas in mind. Again opting for a natural make-up look, Eden Loweth chose to have models wear alternating yellow and electric blue contact lenses. So if you’re wanting to channel something otherworldly with your beauty look, look no further than this unisex, London-based label.
