What do a paint-splattered inside-out coat, a roll of spangled AstroTurf, and a potato sack all have in common? They all wrapped mod bods at John Galliano’s stellar sophomore offering for Maison Margiela’s Artisanal line. It shows during couture week but the ethos is very different: more rough and ready, raw rather than refined, like the spazzolato and polished mirror shoes bound to the models’ feet with twine. But rest assured, there was artistry in it all – those sacks were hand-painted, those emulsion splodges painstakingly applied, and that AstroTurf had all the grandeur of a Poiret-clad dowager duchess. How fabulous.
