Since 2006, the non-profit organisation (RED) has been helping to raise awareness and funds for the elimination of HIV/ AIDS. Set up by the one and only wraparound shade-wearing U2 frontman Bono and activist, attorney and journalist Bobby Shriver, the initiative has teamed up with international mega-brands including Nike, Coca-Cola, Gap, Armani, Beats and Apple to create products, with up to 50% of profits donated to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Today, it’s announced that Louis Vuitton is the next in line to collaborate with (RED) to create a candle. For each Louis Vuitton x (RED) candle sold, $60 will be donated directly to the fund.
Designed by Marc Newson in a hand-cast ceramic container, with leather handle and scent developed by Louis Vuitton’s Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud. Taking the colour as his inspiration, Belletrund composed the candle’s scent from the finest quality natural ingredients to distil the tang of raspberries and meld with the floral, peppery peony tones to create a warm and richly optimistic olfactory experience. “I was keen to create something that has a strong universal character and with a real sense of liberty. I started with a peony flower accord which has a pronounced character through its highly floral elements with hints of spice, wood, and fruit. It is a perfume in itself”, he explains. The hand-painted matte red wick running down the middle is juxtaposed against milky coloured wax of the candle, the same shade is found at the red metal discs at the candle’s base and lid. “This collaboration with (RED) is indeed a very proud moment for Louis Vuitton and marks a milestone in our story.” says Michael Burke, LV’s Chairman and CEO. “(RED)’s very courageous fight concerns us all, and we at Louis Vuitton will continue to champion their values and dedicated work.”
The Louis Vuitton I (RED) candle will be available in Louis Vuitton stores and online from Wednesday, October 9th.
