I remember the last eclipse. Growing up in the deep South West, folk weren’t generally used to being at the centre of any significant world events, especially such things as an astronomical solar eclipse, an event so dramatic that it bathes your entire town into sudden darkness during the middle of the day. 11.03am on 11 August 1999, to be precise. When I say I remember it, I actually only remember the pre-eclipse drama. “Ere, no sun next week mateys!” fishermen heckled from the hills in the lead up. I wasn’t actually there you see, as to my disappointment my parents decided to book a holiday that week in an effort to escape tourist hell. As a child, I was quite excited about it. Oh well.
