Can’t wait to go clubbing? Neither can Jonathan Anderson. His SS22 Loewe men’s collection is an ode to going out. Referencing rave culture, he served up a neon spliced jolt of joy, bursting with cartoonish silhouettes and escapist textures. From the solarised beach scenes printed onto cotton-rib co-ordinating sets, to the rainbow glitter tinsel that turned up on shorts, vests and even found its way onto Loewe’s woven raffia shoppers, the drudge of everyday dressing was left far behind.
These are clothes for good times and strange times – Anderson has evolved his crafty experimentations to include moulded beaten-metal back plates integrated into outfits and clownish balloon pants, made from woven neon rope. There were other experiments too including richly coloured hoodies and jackets made from cactus leather – a first for the Spanish leather house. As well as round neon raver goggles, the Puzzle bag transformed into a large squishy cross-body hobo.
With this collection, Anderson also continued disruptive experiments in presenting fashion. Alongside a short video, he created two books, one featuring the work of the artist Florain Krewer and another showcasing David Sims photographs of the collection. His aim with these trippy pieces, is to shift perception and create a look that “transforms your state of mind.” Job done.
