What’s with Loewe and Ibiza at the mo? They’re all over it. Not that we’re complaining. Maybe Jonathan’s just keen for his holidays? He deserves it. Because, after reviving the house’s collection with Paula’a Ibiza Boutique, as well as celebrating the third edition of its annual summer shop in the island’s Museu d’Art Contemporani, Loewe have only gone and dropped a ‘Biza banger – created by the formidable pairing of Belgian collective Soulwax and master of the catwalk soundtrack (and generally prolific sound director) Michel Gaubert. Dare we call it a summer anthem? Not of the pool party, no-carbs-before-Marbz sort – rather one that recalls the wet ‘n’ wild debauchery of Ibiza summer nights in the seventies and eighties, involving voice samples of Ibiza veterans fondly recalling their memories of the island over a buttery smooth beat.
The track, Close to Paradise, will be pressed onto vinyl by the independent British music and arts enterprise The Vinyl Factory, and forms one part of a 12-chapter digital publication, an editorial ode to Ibiza, featuring 12 iconic places and 16 personalities, each of whom have left an indelible mark on the island. Speaking on their involvement with the project, Soulwax admitted they, “had a long-held fascination with the history of Ibiza so we were honoured to collaborate with LOEWE and Michel Gaubert to help shine a light on the island’s almost forgotten stories”.
