“Mom! Mom! Can you please buy me the unicorn-shaped one?” I used to go on and on while passing by one of those garish balloon stands which happened to be set up in just about every open public space in 1990s Croatia. Sadly, my mum rarely caved in, and even when she did, I would get one of those tiny ones that came on a stick and didn’t even have any helium inside it… Now, 15 years older, wiser and with better taste, I happen to be craving for a different kind of balloon. It’s Loewe’s latest it bag, launching this year as part of their SS20 collection.
Miles away from multicoloured nylon unicorns, the Balloon bag is Jonathan Anderson’s crafty new take on an old classic. Made from two kinds of leathers, the bucket-like silhouette seems simple on the outside, but is in fact a true piece of artisanal perfection. Its oval, structured base is crafted in robust calf leather to ensure maximum protection, while inside it is a sac of soft napa calfskin. Like everything Loewe do, it’s just as much about the looks as it is about its practicality. The Loewe Balloon comes in three sizes – small, medium and large – as well as in a whole variety of neutral colour combos. Cross-body, on the shoulder or in your hand… Thanks to its versatile straps and shape, the bag can also be worn in a multitude of ways. For example, you can even get a bunch of Balloons, tie them up to your house and pretend you’re the grandpa from Up. That’s a chic lifestyle…
The Loewe ‘Balloon’ bag is now available to shop online and in selected stores.
