Blingin’ It: Liv Luttrell’s Editions Turn Fine Jewellery Into Sculpture

Blingin’ It is Ten’s online series where we spotlight the innovators and change-makers of the jewellery world.

They say seven is a magic figure; for starters it’s a prime number, there are also seven glorious days in every week, and now there are seven elegant Editions to add to Liv Luttrell’s series of fine jewellery designs.

The London-based designer describes her latest offering as sculptural, organic, and minimal. A product of her signature creative process, this series is focused on creating a sense of motion through the careful placement of gemstones and diamonds, together with hand-textured gold. These latest Editions feature contrasts between white and yellow gold, adorned with champagne, cognac and white diamonds. Unique to each Edition though is its dramatic yet delicate form, with a gentle sensuality carved into each piece.

An art school graduate, Luttrell found herself gravitating towards contemporary jewellery design and pursued further study in Gemmology at London’s Gemological Institute of America. Before launching her own studio in 2016 she dedicated a year to studying Goldsmithing, laying the foundations for communicating with her expert team of craftspeople. Having featured in last year’s Force of Nature exhibition at the Elisabetta Cipriani Gallery, Luttrell has secured her place as both an artist and innovator in the eyes of industry heavyweights.

ON HER FAVOURITE NEW EDITIONS

Luttrell: “I always work in series of individual Edition designs rather than collections. This means every design is arrived at through an intense individual process which makes it tough to choose a favourite! I find I have phases of feeling very attached to one piece and will either have it on my desk with me while I am working, or I will wear it non-stop!  This is currently the Folde Ring in yellow gold with dappled champagne and cognac diamonds, it is a shape I hand carved from wax, so I feel deeply connected to it.”

ON DESIGNING WITH DIAMONDS AND EMERALDS

Luttrell: “I love the colour palette of diamonds, they are also the most amazingly precise piece of natural material and can be cut to tiny, yet perfectly formed sizes which work well for the slim lines of stones I often create. Emeralds are in many ways the opposite to diamonds, their softness makes them vulnerable to cut and work with, they are a challenge to get in matching pairs and sizes and have a wide variety of clarity. They are quite magical with their amazing green light, each one having its individual maze of inclusions known as the ‘Jardin’.”

ON JEWELLERY TRENDS

Luttrell: “Like many designers, I try my best not to spend too much time looking at other jewellery to avoid imprinting and being influenced, however subtlety. Though, I do have a love of Cartier tiaras from the early 20th century; there is a particular one made of blackened steel and rubies. I draw my design influences from other areas of design, namely architecture and furniture, as well as abstract sculpture. Simplicity is at the core of my work: so many Danish designers are amongst my favourites. There are so many pieces of Danish silver jewellery which I really love.”

ON FINDING INSPIRATION IN FURNITURE

Luttrell: “There is a lot of furniture on my mood board currently. At the centre is a Shell Chair by Hans J. Wegner for Fritz Hansen with a stunning, high-polished curving back. A daybed by Ib Kofod-Larsen with the most beautiful woven base is my star at present; the texture of the weave threaded through the side of this bed is the basis for a bespoke piece I have just designed for a private client.”

ON JEWELLERY MUST-HAVES

Luttrell: “A pair of my Diamond Edge Twist Hoop Earrings in yellow gold. They are an amazing balance of a sculptural design but are so comfortable to wear. The tiny edge of cognac-coloured diamonds adds a luxurious feel without being overpowering. I feel that they bring a touch a glamour to the day and evening! Or I might be tempted to just wear my signature Spear Tip Ring in white gold with a stunning Marquise cut diamond, it is a simple yet powerful design that I love.”
