Kristen Stewart: The Lagerfeld Muse Chanel Never Knew They Needed

KRISTEN KARL FIRST IMAGE

“Such a leader, such a teacher, such a compassionate, endlessly curious motherfucker.” This is how actress Kristen Stewart described dear friend, the late Karl Lagerfeld, this past weekend at the Chanel pre-Oscar dinner. In between playing a battle-ready Snow White, or planting herself into a Jeremy Kyle-worthy love triangle between a werewolf and a vampire aka the Twilight saga, Stewart has been a Chanel ambassadress since 2014. Though she wasn’t no cookie-cutter Hollywood it-girl. K-Stew’s effortlessly cool attitude, with twinge of awkwardness, gave the Chanel girl a grit in her teeth.

Despite Lagerfeld’s immaculate collections most often reaching a five figure price point, Stewart wore it as if she picked it out her closet without much thought. The actress paved the way for the likes of Lily-Rose Depp and Willow Smith to follow in her footsteps – he rebel spirits of these women brought the Chanel classic silhouettes into the 2010s. Hemlines were shortened, whilst à la mode fabrics like leather and PVC began to creep up in more recent Lagerfeld creations. Stewart was the yin to Lagerfeld’s yang, an off-kilter pairing which gave Chanel a new edge. Here are Ten’s favourite K-Stew Chanel moments:

Stewart is America’s sweetheart in Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2014 campaign.

Everything’s big in Texas, but even The Lone Star State wasn’t prepared for  Lagerfeld’s Métiers d’Art Pre-Fall 14 collection. Held in Dallas, the collection, girthy with 94 looks, consisted mainly of Americana classics with a lick of Parisian elegance. The cross continent connection didn’t stop with the clothes however, as the late designer nabbed Stewart to front the collection’s campaign. Holding a bandana, adorned with the American flag, close to her face, as if battle ready, the actress is armoured in a leather dress trimmed with gold fringing on the arms. With Karl behind the lens, the rebel-spirit Stewart once embodied when playing Joan Jett in The Runaways resurfaced once more. God bless America, and Kristen Stewart in a pair of knee-high, Chanel cowboy boots.

Where would Bella Swan have ended up if she hadn’t met Edward Cullen? We like to think she would’ve packed up and moved to the big city, in search for a career in fashion – Andrea Sachs style. Well the closest we got was the Chanel SS15 eyewear campaign. Embodying the role of a photojournalist, Stewart looks sublime behind the lens, so much so we’ve banned everyone from wearing Adidas joggers at Ten Towers, only bouclé two-piece suits from this day forward.

Wham, Bam, Super Glam: Chanel’s 2015/16 Métiers d’Art Campaign.

When in Rome, act Parisian. To mark the release of Chanel’s ‘Paris in Rome’ pre fall 15/16 collection, Lagerfeld appointed K-Stew once more to star in the black and white campaign film. Looking rather elusive in a knitted jumpsuit teamed with a pair of lace stockings, Stewart frolics about in a sleek marble bathroom, too unbothered to touch up her smudged, heavy eye liner – her gaze smouldering. As Stewart unbuttons her lacey Chanel blouse to the sounds of Gil Scott Heron’s I’ll Take Care of You, it’s that big time sensuality we crave from any fashion film.

K-Stew bares all in Chanel’s ‘Gabrielle’ fragrance campaign

2015 saw Stewart dancing, kicking and screaming to the Beyonce and Naughty Boy collab Runnin’ (Lose It All). No, this wasn’t a deleted fight scene from Twilight, but the advert for Gabrielle, Chanel’s first new fragrance in fifteen years. K-Stew turned health guru, we hope the actress never skipped leg day at the gym in preparation for the shoot as we bet there was a lot of leg work that day. Stewart’s sheer athleticism got us runnn, runnin, runnin’…. down to Argos to buy a Fitbit. We might even pop into Harvey Nichols on the way back to the office to grab a Gabrielle tester.

Karl Lagerfeld played a wild card back in 2015, transforming Chanel’s Paris space into a grand casino. Fitted with Chanel embossed slot machines and poker tables, attention was diverted away from the clothes, and to the all-star line-up of poker players. Stewart entered arm-in-arm with Still Alice co-star Julianne Moore, closely followed by Lily Collins, Rita Ora, Lara Stone and Lily-Rose Depp. Pulling a stern poker face, K-Stew certainly didn’t deal a wrong hand in a velvet two piece suit, her signature cropped locks swept to one side – looking rather Bowie circa the Berlin trilogy era. We like to think the stakes were truly raised after the show, with the star-studded line up adding each other on Facebook to play an Oscar worthy game of Texas Hold’Em Poker.
