FROM THE VAULT (WINTER 2010)
JULIAN VOGEL CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND JOINT MANAGING DIRECTOR, PUBLICIST, MODUS PUBLICITY
“When I was growing up I always liked Mr Ben. Going off to the fancy-dress shop and going through the changing-room door that led to adventures…” Nowadays though it’s more a case of taking of his many varied clients through that door, making dreams come true if you will.
“I grew up in a house surrounded by fashion. My father was marketing director for Levi’s in the 1970s and my mother was an art buyer for an ad agency – she worked with Bailey and Parkinson. They both had incredible wardrobes – my father in super-cool 1970s Yves Saint Laurent and mother in Pucci and Courrèges always had a killer heel – Charles Jourdan. We always had all the weekend papers and magazines. I used to cut out my favourite ads and put them in a scrapbook.
“I studied business and marketing. I was 20, in my final year, when my twin brother who studied textiles introduced me to a friend who was working at a PR and show-production company. I would skip accountancy lectures to be backstage producing shows. My first was Ozbek. It was the start of the supermodels – Naomi, Kate, Yasmin Le Bon, Gail Elliott were the models I first worked with. I loved the energy and excitement. Working with the best creative people – photographers, designers, hairstylists, session make-up artists and editors.
“I have been lucky to work with so many of my fashion heroes, from Katharine Hamnett, who taught me about getting your message across and working on international shows; Tom Ford with Gucci Group, when we worked with Boucheron, Gucci watches and fragrance; Calvin Klein – the brand meister – we have worked on the brand for the past 15 years, the most creative campaigns, celebrity endorsements and events; British-based designers, from Erdem and Jonathan Saunders to, more recently, David Koma.We are currently working with Ms Jil Sander on her +J collection with Uniqlo.“
“I am a typical Taurean. I tend to be very calm and collected on the outside. I take on board a lot of other people’s stress and anxiety. It takes a lot to get me angry, but there is definitely a line and, when crossed, I charge. I have a very long memory and never forget.”
