FROM THE VAULT (SUMMER 2011)
Jordan Askill – The Sculptor
“My name is Jordan, I live in London, and I am from Australia. I make sculpture that is able to stand alone, jewellery, objects that you can also take with you.”
YOU ALWAYS SEEM TO HAVE FINGERS IN EVERY PIE. ARE YOU LIKE A CAT? DO YOU HAVE NINE LIVES? WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE SETTING UP ON YOUR OWN?
“I have always designed things. I have assisted in ready-to-wear luxury houses in Paris and Australia, art directed dance companies, created objects and work in films with my brothers. I’ve always thought it’s been part of the same universe. I always work with my brothers when I can.”
HOW DO YOU WORK? DO YOU SKETCH AND THEN MAKE? ARE THERE MOULDS INVOLVED?
“There are moulds and my own version of mock-ups involved. I decide in my head and on paper what I am going to do. I then figure out how I can do it.”
WHAT GOES THOUGH YOUR HEAD WHEN YOU DESIGN?
“It is based around an Idea of re-creating an object with feeling, and the world that would surround it.”
WHERE DO FIND YOUR INSPIRATION FOR ALL YOUR DESIGNS? OR IS IT ALL A FANTASY WORLD YOU CREATE IN YOUR HEAD?
“It kind of comes out of my head, but it’s always based on things I love and feelings that surround us.”
PLEASE SUM UP YOUR AESTHETIC.
“It is always based on an organic shape but is quite geometric and organised in structure and technique. I like the idea of creating ecosystems frozen in time.”
IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
“Probably to be able to fly and to become invisible.”
