Jawara Alleyne goes from strength to strength. The emerging talent’s design hand is led by a deconstruction approach, stripping garments back to their bare bones and rebuilding them again in truly exciting formations. Rihanna was an early supporter, and more stars have followed suit: both Charli xcx and Shakira have adopted Alleyne’s warped silhouettes into their touring uniforms.
In Jawara land, the familiar is sliced, diced, turned inside out. The inner workings of garments are not hidden but forced into the spotlight, their raw construction marking an act of rebellious, tattered glamour. He pushes silhouettes to intriguing extremes, pulling and safety pinning deadstock fabrics into divine concoctions. Highlights this season included deadstock tees hacked at to create a sensual fringing effect that exposed models’ bare torsos. A similar technique was applied to men’s polo shirts that were stocked on top of one another in clashing stripes that’ll undoubtedly be a hit with the designer’s growing fanbase. Elsewhere, large swathes of plaid were carefully controlled into elegant frocks that crept up models’ necks, all while crimson red fishnet overlayed onto column dresses carried forth the fabulous shipwrecked look that has been woven into his previous collections. There is so much to be excited about when it comes to Alleyne, his ascent is just getting started.
