It’s Getting Hot In Here: Statement Thongs Are The Latest In Noughties Nostalgia

Once considered raunchy and radical, peek-a-boo knickers have inserted themselves into the fashion sphere as a must-have streetwear staple. Let be honest, the majority of us have had a bit of a soft spot for the exposed g-string since the start of this new-age Y2K renaissance. Quite possibly, we can chock it up to widespread nostalgia disseminated through social media, especially TikTok; the last two seasons of runways also go to show for it. Now, the sight of a whale tail has become somewhat synonymous with a certain early aughts brand of rebellion and an expression of divine, unabashed, female sexuality. Exposed underwear has become a mainstay amongst the A-team of our day, from Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa to Julia Fox, at a time when we all seem a bit sex crazed coming out of Covid. Truth be told, this sultry aesthetic is here to stay.

But while this style-erotica resurgence may be far from over, we’ve entered a brand new phase of baring our underwear and its one ripped straight out of the gorgeous gorgeous girls’ style bible – statement thongs.

It was about damn time our knickers became less strappy and opted instead to make a statement. If you’re looking for paragons of the in-your-face aesthetic, take it from Grammy-award winning rapper Doja Cat, who might as well be the poster child of the movement. A few weeks ago the icon was spotted exiting an automobile wearing an open-front, denim, micro-mini skirt held together by a single button, underneath of which a pair of white, pseudo-trash cotton undies with the word “Yes”, emblazoned across the front in red and yellow type stole the spotlight. It was an intentional crotch-shot, and a maverick move, really, to see intimates out in public wherein the sole purpose is to be seen. While in this case, the knickers are noted to be of Doja’s recently released clothing line, It’s Giving, others are boldly embracing the era’s love of a little exibitionism. Daring designers like Mowalola, Area, Vaquera and the MA students coming out of Central Saint Martins are making waves when it comes to baring it all – and giving they most certainly are.

Though this hot ticket trend is a bold one, it’s also one we can definitely get behind. So take a page from Doja Cat’s beautifully brazen handbook and let your statement thongs fly free.
