IMELDA MARCOS: HERE LIES LOVE
In other far east first lady news, David Byrne’s musical celebration of Imelda Marcos ‘Here Lies Love’ is going to be on broadway. Imelda is well known for her love of shoes as well as her Coconut Palace built in 1978. The palace is “is made of several types of Philippine hardwood, coconut shells, and a specially engineered coconut lumber apparently known as Imelda Madera.” It is “shaped like an octagon (the shape given to a coconut before being served), while the roof is shaped like a traditional Filipino salakot or hat. Some of its highlights are the 101 coconut-shell chandelier, and the dining table made of 40,000 tiny pieces of inlaid coconut shells.” She also apparently said no to buying the Empire State Building for $750 million as she declared it to be too ostentatious. She is also well known for her extravagance but as she so rightly said herself “People say I’m extravagant because I want to be surrounded by beauty. But tell me, who wants to be surrounded by garbage?” To celebrate, here is Imelda with Ruby Wax. And always remember to “never dress down for the poor. They won’t respect you for it. They want their First Lady to look like a million dollars.”
Here Lies Love is playing at the Public Theatre, New York from April 2nd, 2013.
