Walking into the House of Holland show space felt quite like a scene from The Hunger Games. One huge silver sphere inhabited the centre of the makeshift arena next to King’s Cross, with a lengthy chorus of spectators making rings around it. A quick scan of the space: Katniss Everdeen is nowhere to be found. She couldn’t possibly snatch the spotlight when you have Billy Porter sat front row; glistening in his hotter-than-hot pink HoH blazer. But Holland’s SS20 offering wasn’t inspired by sci-fi, nor fantasy, or any trips to the cinema for that matter. It was about the “pleasure seekers, the heavy hitters, and the dance floor fillers”. Has someone been bumping our Spotify playlists?
Soundtracked by Sophie’s produced, synthetic-pop bangers (as curated by Nick Grimshaw), a parade of sexy going-out dresses made their way out. Some doused in glitter, others in acid greens and scorching oranges. Whilst the music references were more evident in some looks than others (the twinsets plastered with “house” were on the top of our shopping lists) disco and house ran through the veins of the collection like it was the Heaven dance floor or a Scouse hen-do. There were organza shirts worn other skin-tight athleisure, before the Xtep x HoH City Runner sportswear capsule collection closed the show. Holland is designing for those who want to pop and lock and jam and break with ease. There were even JBL speakers morphed into club-ready clutches. Now that’s what you call a floor filler classic.
