Don’t you hate when you spend a lot of money on a really great bag, wear it out for the first time and then see another two people carrying around the same one? Or is that just me? The notion of uniqueness representing luxury isn’t necessarily new, but is definitely becoming more and more prevalent in the realms of fashion. What was once reserved for cars, watches and high jewellery, now is trickling down into ready-to-wear, accessories and shoes. A special, limited-edition object is what you want to splash out on. This is where Gucci’s latest novelties come in. In celebration of this seasons Pitti Uomo fair in Florence and the new exhibition opening at the Gucci Garden, the Italian brand launched an extensive collection of pieces only available at the boutique in their museum at Piazza Della Signoria. And when I say extensive – I mean really really large. “Exclusivity is key to the special Gucci Garden store,” the brand’s press release says. That includes ready-to-wear pieces covered in illustrations by artist Livia Carpenzano, Gucci Décor pieces such as special variations of their upholstered dining chairs, as well as a special map of Florence detailing Alessandro Michele’s favourite haunts in the city. Gucci Garden is basically the best souvenir shop in all of Florence, if not Italy.
But if we had to choose just one piece from this new line of wearable collectibles, it would have to be the reissue of the Gucci Bamboo bag. This 1940s classic was originally one of the brand’s first signature bags to reach cult fame, its use of the curved Bamboo bag and a matching rotating clasp subverting the tradition of bag design at the time. The slight rounded shape is reminiscent of the past, but modern – just like everything else Michele brings (back) to life. For this special occasion, the Gucci Bamboo is interpreted in vibrant prints which take cues from renaissance, art deco and baroque, mashed up in patterns that could only stand for modern-day Gucci. Possibly the most luxurious souvenir you’ll ever get on your trip, this is the bag you oughta have in your collection. Who needs a magnet when you can get a Gucci Bamboo? But just to be clear – I’m getting the burgundy leather with the green tapestry print so please make sure not to wear it around me.
